The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability during the new student orientation event, Pionir Dialektika, held from July 31 to August 1, 2024, by implementing a policy to reduce the use of single-use food packaging.

During the two-day Pionir Dialektika event, the faculty provided food in reusable containers, reducing plastic waste. New students were also required to bring their own water bottles and eating utensils.

“This policy not only aims to reduce plastic waste but also teaches new students from the start about the importance of environmental awareness and adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle,” said Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, S.S., M.Hum., Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.

New students welcomed this initiative and enthusiastically followed the established rules. Throughout the orientation, they were encouraged to become more sensitive to environmental issues and understand that small actions, such as reducing plastic use, can have a significant impact on the preservation of nature.

This policy aligns with the Faculty of Philosophy’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Goal 13 (Climate Action).

By reducing waste, the faculty is not only making a tangible contribution to the environment but also fostering ecological awareness among new students, which is expected to be applied in their daily lives.

“The implementation of this environmentally friendly Pionir Dialektika is hoped to be the first step in creating a generation of students who are not only intellectually smart but also care about and take responsibility for environmental sustainability,” added the Dean.

A similar policy was applied during the university-wide Pionir event, where the Faculty of Philosophy hosted over 500 students from various faculties at UGM. The Faculty of Philosophy remains committed to continuously innovating and implementing policies that support sustainability across various events and in daily academic activities.
