Sapiens Club, a student organization from the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada, presented a vibrant cultural event titled Ode to Karsa. Held at IFI-LIP Yogyakarta in Sagan, this celebration brought together art, culture, and inclusivity through an engaging series of activities: kite painting, a sign language workshop, and a theatrical performance in collaboration with FSB Retorika titled Sukmaku Rawagede. Open to students, the Deaf community, and the general public, the event fostered creativity, understanding, and reflection on Indonesia’s historical and cultural narratives.

The kite-painting activity provided a nostalgic and interactive space for participants to reconnect with traditional joys. Kites, a simple yet profound cultural symbol, remind us that happiness often lies in the simplicity of tradition rather than the complexities of modern technology. Through painting and decorating their kites, participants were invited to revisit a time when worries seemed distant, celebrating the timeless value of childhood memories and cultural heritage.

The sign language workshop was a meaningful initiative addressing the linguistic and social barriers faced by the Deaf community. Beyond the physical challenges of inaccessible infrastructure, the Deaf community often experiences linguistic injustice. By offering an introduction to sign language, this workshop aimed to raise awareness about the richness of Deaf culture and the need for greater inclusion. It encouraged participants to recognize sign language as a legitimate and vibrant means of communication, fostering a sense of respect and solidarity for the Deaf community’s unique contributions to cultural diversity.

The theatrical performance, Sukmaku Rawagede, brought to life a poignant chapter in Indonesia’s history: the massacre of Rawagede. Through evocative storytelling and compelling performances, the production honored the sacrifices of the nation’s heroes while serving as a powerful reminder of the dark moments in the country’s past. The collaboration between Sapiens Club and FSB Retorika emphasized the importance of remembering historical tragedies as a means of cultivating awareness and resilience for the future.

Inclusivity was a central theme throughout Ode to Karsa, ensuring that art and expression were accessible to everyone, including the Deaf community. The event underscored the philosophy that creativity and cultural appreciation transcend barriers, bridging gaps between diverse communities and fostering mutual understanding. By creating a welcoming space for dialogue and collaboration, Sapiens Club demonstrated its commitment to art as a universal language that connects people across differences.

With its rich blend of tradition, creativity, and inclusivity, Ode to Karsa was more than an event—it was a celebration of humanity’s shared cultural wealth. Through this initiative, Sapiens Club redefined the boundaries of artistic expression, proving that art can serve as a powerful medium for inclusion, remembrance, and cultural continuity.
