The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has announced the extension of the registration period for the 2025 Philosophy Essay Competition (PEC) until June 24, 2025. The extension was made to provide wider opportunities for prospective participants who still wish to join but were unable to complete their submissions within the initial registration period.

Carrying the theme “Open Science, For Whom?”, this national essay competition invites high school students and university students from across Indonesia to submit their critical reflections on the practice of open science. The theme reflects concerns about the reality of unequal access to knowledge and the effort to democratize science through transparency, collaboration, and accessibility. In this regard, PEC serves not only as a writing competition but also as a reflective space to amplify voices that are often epistemically marginalized.

This year, PEC is open in two participant categories: high school students (or equivalent) and university students as well as the general public. Each participant is required to submit an essay of no more than ten pages in Indonesian, written in a critical, communicative, and argumentative style. The essay must be original, unpublished, and not currently submitted to any other competition. Submissions must follow the specified format, and participants are required to upload a statement of originality along with other registration documents through the official link provided.

In addition to being part of the Faculty of Philosophy’s Anniversary celebration, PEC also serves as a platform to encourage young generations to formulate alternative perspectives on the future of knowledge in Indonesia. With the registration period extended, the committee hopes to receive more fresh ideas grounded not only in theory but also in the complex and challenging realities of society.

The selection and evaluation process will run until June 30, 2025, with winners scheduled to be announced on July 10, 2025. For each category, cash prizes and e-certificates will be awarded to the top ten essays. Further information, including detailed guidelines and the registration form, can be accessed via ugm.id/DaftarPEC2025.
