Twelve students from various countries participated in a two-week study program at the Faculty of Philosophy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), through the School of International Training (SIT) Study Abroad program. Held from October 7 to 17, 2024, the program carried the theme “Arts, Religion, and Social Change,” guiding students to explore the arts and religions that shape the socio-cultural discourse in Indonesia.
“We hope there will be engaging and beneficial discussions for the students, both for SIT participants and our own students, especially on the important topics covered,” said Dr. Iva Ariani, S.S., M.Hum., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni at the Faculty of Philosophy.
At the Faculty of Philosophy, the SIT Study Abroad participants learned about Pancasila as the ideology of the Indonesian nation, contemporary socio-political contexts in Indonesia, the history of religions in the country, as well as the diversity of Nusantara culture and its significance to the Indonesian people.
In addition to classroom lectures and discussions, the students also had the opportunity to experience Indonesia’s unique culture firsthand by visiting historic landmarks, learning traditional dance, and trying their hand at cooking typical Yogyakarta dishes.
The SIT Study Abroad program is a regular initiative held in collaboration with SIT, the Faculty of Philosophy at UGM, and several other universities. This program provides a unique learning experience and socio-cultural exposure, while also serving as a platform to introduce the richness of Indonesia’s culture and local wisdom to the global community.
“This is a very positive activity. We hope that in the future, we can continue this collaboration,” added Iva.
Yudhistira Kazuhiro Budiono, Academic Director of SIT Study Abroad Indonesia, explained that the program is designed to help students develop essential knowledge, skills, and values.
“This program allows students to share culture and understanding with one another. They can openly share experiences and grow together,” he explained.
