The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is once again organizing the Philosophy Essay Competition (PEC), an essay-writing contest for high school students. This year’s theme, “Rethinking Philosophy and Religion in a Post-Technology World,” aligns with the 57th Anniversary celebration of the Faculty of Philosophy at UGM. The submission period began on May 1 and will end on July 20, 2024.
“This competition invites high school students to explore how philosophy and religion remain relevant, meaningful, and provide guidance in an increasingly technologized world. Participants are encouraged to develop their analytical thinking skills, writing abilities, and deepen their understanding of complex issues,” said Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, S.S., M.Hum., Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.
She explained that innovations such as digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology not only transform daily life but also raise new questions about identity, ethics, and the meaning of life. Philosophy, with its critical and reflective approach, offers tools to unravel the complexities of the modern world.
“It is essential for younger generations to reflect on and understand the impacts of these changes on fundamental fields, including philosophy and religion. This competition provides a platform for teenagers to express their views, helping them become more critical individuals, better prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the modern world, and capable of being wise and responsible global citizens,” the Dean elaborated.
The Philosophy Essay Competition (PEC) is an annual event held as part of the Faculty of Philosophy’s anniversary celebration. The competition aims to encourage students from across Indonesia to develop critical thinking, ethical reflection, and academic writing skills through the exploration of contemporary philosophical topics.
Participants can choose from several sub-themes, including “The Relationship Between Religion and Technology,” “The Intersection of Philosophy and Technology,” “Reflecting on a Post-Technology World,” “Ethics of Technology,” and other creative ideas. Assessment criteria include the title/theme, structure, depth and sharpness of analysis and argumentation, coherence between ideas, editing and language, as well as the adequacy and reliability of data and references.
“PEC 2024 welcomes elaborations on other sub-themes as long as they align with alternative, speculative, philosophical, and profound trajectories relevant to the broader theme or issues analyzed. Case studies reflected through in-depth experiences are also encouraged,” explained Rangga Kala Mahaswa, M.Phil., Chair of PEC 2024.
