The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held the 2024 Philo Run, a unique event combining physical activity with philosophical reflection, on Sunday, November 24. Over 300 participants from various backgrounds, including students, faculty members, running communities, and the general public, joined the event, which was part of the celebrations for World Philosophy Day, themed “Philosophy of Well-Being.”
Taking place on the UGM campus, Philo Run offered a distinct twist on traditional running events. Along the 5-kilometer route, participants were greeted with philosophical quotes and reflections, encouraging them to contemplate the true meaning of well-being—not just in physical terms but also mental and spiritual health.
“Well-being is not just about material wealth but how we live wisely. Through running, we are invited to reflect on the connection between physical activity and mental health, as the harmony between spiritual and physical well-being forms the foundation of a good life,” said Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, S.S., M.Hum., Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy.
In this event, participants were encouraged to enjoy every step they took, not just to run for the fastest time. As such, there were no podiums or time limits, and every runner received a medal upon crossing the finish line, regardless of the time recorded.
The event’s theme, “Running for Wellbeing – A Philosophical Journey,” is particularly relevant to modern life, which often leads to stress, alienation, and a loss of meaning. “Philosophy provides a space for reflection to understand what truly matters in life: happiness rooted in meaning, harmonious relationships with others, and inner peace,” Murtiningsih explained.
In addition to general participants, the event also attracted various public figures, academics, and campus partners, adding to the festive atmosphere. For participants, Philo Run was not just an enjoyable running experience but also a space for reflection and dialogue, allowing them to appreciate the small things in life and maintain a balance between body and mind.
This event was a highlight of the World Philosophy Day (WPD) series, organized by the Faculty of Philosophy UGM in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Jakarta. The WPD festivities will continue with seminars, debates, and philosophical podcasts throughout the end of November.
