The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), in collaboration with ICT Watch, held the AI Literacy Summit on Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the UGM Innovation and Creativity Hub (Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas/GIK). The event brought together academics, policymakers, and digital literacy advocates to discuss the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for humanity, education, and society.

Executive Director of ICT Watch, Indriyatno Banyumurti, noted that since 2002 ICT Watch has been promoting positive internet use and digital literacy in Indonesia. “Together, we are building a cyberspace that is safer, more ethical, and inclusive. Technology always has both positive and negative sides, so it must be used wisely,” he said.

In her remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy emphasized that discussions on AI cannot be separated from philosophical questions about humanity. She pointed out that throughout history, humans have continually asked, “Who am I?”—a question closely tied to consciousness, freedom, and responsibility.

“In the era of AI, that question resurfaces. All questions about AI ultimately return to human identity. AI does not emerge from a vacuum, but from the ways humans understand the world, rationality, and their own intelligence,” she explained.

Through the AI Literacy Summit, the Faculty of Philosophy reaffirmed its commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue on technology, ethics, and humanity, while strengthening public digital literacy to enable the responsible, critical, and reflective use of artificial intelligence.

On the same occasion, the Rector of UGM highlighted that technological developments present both opportunities and concerns, particularly regarding ethics and academic integrity within higher education. He noted that the event is highly relevant to the needs of the academic community in understanding AI critically.

“UGM has established several early milestones in AI development, including the publication of guidelines on the ethical use of generative AI in academic contexts in 2025. UGM remains committed to overseeing digital transformation and the advancement of knowledge in a responsible manner,” he said.

The summit featured a public lecture by the Head of Human Resource Development Agency at the Ministry of Communication and Digital, Bonifasius Pujianto, as well as a workshop titled “Cyber-Aware Students: Safeguarding Privacy and Personal Data in the AI Era.” The event also included the signing of a cooperation agreement between ICT Watch and the Faculty of Philosophy UGM.

In his lecture, Bonifasius Pujianto highlighted the impact of AI on the economy and social inclusivity. He emphasized that AI development must not overlook persons with disabilities and should encourage interdisciplinary opportunities.

“The digital economy in Southeast Asia is projected to reach up to US$1 trillion, with Indonesia contributing around US$366 billion. The challenge is how we achieve this. Startups do not always have to be purely technology-based; they can also be multidisciplinary,” he said.
