UGM Advocates for Strengthening Artificial Intelligence Governance Regulations

Indonesia’s digital economy, projected to reach 366 billion US dollars by 2030, is expected to grow exponentially. This growth hinges significantly on the strategic utilization of artificial intelligence (AI) technology across industries. 

However, to ensure that AI benefits society without causing harm, more robust regulatory frameworks governing its ethical and responsible use are urgently needed.

This topic took center stage at a public discussion, “The Need to Develop Artificial Intelligence Governance Regulations,” hosted at the UGM Senate Hall on Friday (Mar. 8). read more

Communication Ministry Backs UGM: Deputy Minister Champions AI Ethics in Education and Industry

Nezar Patria, the Deputy Minister of Communication and Information Technology, enthusiastically endorses research and studies probing the ethical dimensions of deploying artificial intelligence (AI) in industrial and educational domains. 

This resonates with the minister’s recently introduced policy, unveiling ethical guidelines for AI application in the public sector, a strategic move to ensure AI’s secure and productive use.

Speaking during the seminar titled “Recent Developments in Artificial Intelligence: Ethical Considerations and Global Experience Exploration,” held at the Notonagoro Room, UGM Faculty of Philosophy, on Wednesday (Dec. 27), Patria expressed strong support for university-led activities delving into the latest advancements in AI. read more

The Faculty of Philosophy at UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada) Launches the ASEAN Journal of CI-EL and Applied Philosophy

On Tuesday (5/9), the Faculty of Philosophy launched the ASEAN Journal of CI-EL and Applied Philosophy, which was inaugurated by the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at UGM, Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, M.Hum, and the CEO of PT. Markplus Indonesia, Dr. (H.C) Hermawan Kertajaya, S.E., M.B.A. Present at the event were the Markplus.inc team, lecturers, educational staff, representatives of the Head of Study Centers at UGM, student representatives, and invited guests from various partner universities. In her address, the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy conveyed that the business world in today’s era is expected not to abandon ethical values and humanity, as these two principles must be upheld in conducting a business. read more

AI Ethics Training by UNESCO for Indonesian Teachers

On 23-24 August 2023, UNESCO held an Ethics Teachers Training Course (ETTC) focused on AI ethics in Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the University Gadjah Mada.

The interactive event brought together 30 participants from various backgrounds and universities at UGM’s Faculty of Philosophy, to build capacity of professional lecturers on AI ethics, towards a responsible and inclusive AI technology for the future.

The theoretical part introduced global perspectives on ethics teaching, with trends, challenges, opportunities, pedagogy and psychology,  and the philosophy of AI ethics in the Indonesian context of Pancasila. It  presented UNESCO’s Recommendation on  the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence launched in November 2021 and adopted by 193 Member States, including Indonesia. read more

The Faculty of Philosophy at UGM (Universitas Gadjah Mada) and UNESCO have agreed to provide recommendations on the ethics of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Indonesia during a series of webinar events titled “AI Ethics in Indonesia: Contextualizing UNESCO’S Recommendation on Ethics of AI within Pancasila”, held on Thursday, 16th March 2023. This webinar is a continuation of references and basic research recommendations on the ethics of Artificial Intelligence based on the values of Pancasila. read more

32th HIDESI Conference

Faculty of Philosophy UGM had the honor to hold the 32nd Conference of the Association of Indonesian Ethics Lecturers (HIDESI) on July 15-16, 2022. The event was themed “Ethics and Respect for Life: Ethical Reflections on Pandemics, War, and Human Crisis” This study aims to explore and elaborate basic ideas related to ethical problems and principles that arise as a result of pandemics and wars. The conference, which was held offline and online, was attended by more than 30 ethics lecturers from all over Indonesia. read more

Faculty of Philosophy UGM Conducts Summer Course in Ethics and Applied Philosophy

Faculty of Philosophy UGM has conducted Summer Course on Contemporary Issues on Ethics and Applied Philosophy from 3-10 November 2019. As many as 18 students from Australia, Timor Leste, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, the Middle East, and Africa participated in the Summer Course in addition to 6 students from UGM.

The participants took part in courses related to ideology, politics, democracy, and other issues. On Monday (11/4), Prof. Mukhtasar Syamsuddin, Ph.D., gave a lecture themed Pancasila as Ethical Foundation for Political Judgment. read more
