Overview

Universitas Gadjah Mada stands as the sole public university in Indonesia with a Faculty of Philosophy. Established in 1967, UGM's Faculty of Philosophy currently hosts over 800 active students, with thousands of alumni making significant contributions across various fields.

The faculty comprises three departments: Western Philosophy, Eastern Philosophy, and Philosophy of Religion. Presently, the Faculty of Philosophy is expanding its research interests, encompassing Ethics, Philosophy of Science and Technology, Philosophy of Religion and Culture, as well as Social and Political Philosophy.

The Faculty of Philosophy oversees three study programs: Bachelor of Philosophy (S1) granting the degree S.Fil., Master of Philosophy (S2) granting the degree M.Fil., and Doctor of Philosophy (S3) granting the doctoral degree. All three programs have obtained accreditation A. Furthermore, the Faculty of Philosophy is responsible for managing Mandatory Curriculum Courses (MKWK) for all faculties at UGM, including courses on Pancasila, Civics, and Religion.

Student Affairs

The Faculty of Philosophy facilitates students in developing competencies and skills through various extracurricular activities, providing a platform for personal growth and fostering individuals who are open-minded, critical, and prepared to face future challenges.

In line with the implementation of the Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) policy by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, the Faculty of Philosophy has adapted its curriculum to enable students to participate in nine types of MBKM learning activities, including student exchange, internships, entrepreneurial activities, and humanitarian projects.

To accommodate diverse interests and hobbies, the Faculty of Philosophy has at least ten Student Activity Bureaus (BKM). These BKMs offer students opportunities to engage in activities aligned with their interests and desires, enriching their campus learning experience and broadening their academic and social horizons.

Research

UGM's Faculty of Philosophy publishes an academic journal called the Journal of Philosophy, managed since 1990, serving as a forum for scholarly communication, thought development, and research in philosophy. In 2022, the Faculty of Philosophy also contributed to the development of three new journals: Lafinus Journal for the advancement of Nusantara Philosophy, ASEAN Journal of CI-EL Applied Philosophy for applied philosophy and business ethics, and Tsaya Dharma Journal for community service.

Additionally, the Faculty of Philosophy collaborates on research with various entities, such as research on Ethics and AI with UNESCO, research on archipelagic islands with France, among others.

Community Engagement

Faculty of Philosophy faculty members' community engagement activities focus on themes such as local wisdom, multiculturalism, digital literacy, introduction to UGM, character education, nationalism, Pancasila ideology, pluralism, modernity, radicalism, and philosophical scholarship.

These activities are carried out through collaborations with other institutions, such as high schools, Islamic boarding schools, colleges, and local governments located in Imogiri, Bantul (Special Region of Yogyakarta), Pasuruan (East Java), Bondowoso (East Java), East Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara), Palembang (South Sumatra), and Singkawang (West Kalimantan).
