Faculty of Philosophy UGM Graduates 29 Bachelor Students, 20 with Cum Laude Honors

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a graduation send-off ceremony today (May 28) in the Ruang Persatuan, following the university-wide graduation procession at Grha Sabha Pramana. A total of 29 students officially graduated, with 20 of them earning the distinction of cum laude.

The warm and emotional ceremony was attended by faculty members, administrative staff, as well as the graduates’ parents and guardians. A familial atmosphere filled the room as each graduate’s name was called to receive congratulations from faculty leaders. read more

Faculty of Philosophy UGM’s Great Philosopher Discussion Explores J.L. Mackie’s Error Theory in Morality

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada once again hosted its regular Great Philosopher discussion series, this time focusing on a significant topic in metaethics: the Error Theory of Morality by philosopher J.L. Mackie. The discussion took place at the Faculty of Philosophy Library Reading Room and was led by Gladwin Panjaitan as the speaker, with Alfred Brilian Bassang serving as moderator.

During the session, Gladwin reviewed J.L. Mackie’s ideas as presented in his book Ethics: Inventing Right and Wrong (1977), where Mackie proposed a skeptical moral approach he termed the Error Theory. This theory acts as a critical response to the then-dominant Emotivism by arguing that linguistic analysis alone is insufficient to fully grasp moral reality. read more

Supporting Student Career Preparation, Faculty of Philosophy UGM Holds LinkedIn Workshop

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a workshop titled “LinkedIn for Career Success: Build Your Professional Personal Branding Now!” via Zoom Meeting on Friday, May 16. The event, attended by undergraduate students, especially the classes of 2022 and 2023, aimed to equip them with practical skills to build a strong and credible personal brand on professional social media, in collaboration with representatives from LinkedIn Indonesia.

In her opening remarks, the Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Cooperation, and Alumni, Dr. Iva Ariani, S.S., M.Hum., emphasized the importance of student readiness to enter the workforce early. “With the competitive nature of the job market and industry, professional platforms like LinkedIn have become important for all of us. Not only for job searching, but also for building personal branding, professional networking, and leveraging it for long-term career development,” she explained. read more

Philosophy Essay Competition 2025 Officially Opens: Participant Requirements and Submission Guidelines

Registration for the Philosophy Essay Competition (PEC) 2025 officially opened on May 10 and will continue until June 17, 2025. This competition provides a platform for students and university students across Indonesia to express their philosophical ideas in essay form. With the theme “Open Science, For Whom?”, PEC 2025 aims to raise awareness among participants about the importance of equal access to knowledge.

“As digital natives, Indonesian youth can play a key role in realizing the idea of more Open Science. The knowledge revolution can be achieved through developing alternative knowledge platforms, advocating for local knowledge which is often marginalized, and fostering awareness of epistemic justice that is frequently overlooked,” explained Faculty of Philosophy lecturer and PEC 2025 Committee Chair, Rangga Kala Mahaswa, S.Fil., M.Phil. read more

Faculty of Philosophy UGM Holds National Essay Competition, Open to High School Students and University Students

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is once again organizing the annual Philosophy Essay Competition (PEC) 2025, now in its 14th edition. Unlike previous years, this year’s PEC expands its scope by opening participation not only to 10th and 11th grade high school students but also to active Diploma and Bachelor’s degree students across Indonesia.

PEC 2025 is part of the series of events commemorating the 58th Anniversary of the Faculty of Philosophy UGM, which carries the overarching theme “Open Science: Democratizing Knowledge, Empowering the Marginalized.” The main theme of PEC 2025, “Open Science, For Whom?”, invites young generations to reflect on how education should serve as a tool to liberate marginalized communities from injustice. read more

The celebration carries the theme “Open Science: Democratizing Knowledge, Empowering the Marginalized”, offering a reflective moment to explore the role of philosophy in advancing epistemic justice and promoting open access to knowledge.

“This theme emphasizes the importance of the open science movement as an effort to make scientific knowledge more inclusive, equitable, and accessible to all,” said Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Prof. Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, S.S., M.Hum., on Tuesday (May 6). read more

Faculty of Philosophy UGM and Universitas Samudra Establish Collaboration on the Tri Dharma of Higher Education

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has established a strategic partnership with Universitas Samudra (Unsam) to strengthen cooperation in the three core pillars of higher education in Indonesia: education, research and publication, and community service. This partnership was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy UGM and the Rector of Unsam on Tuesday (May 6) at the Faculty of Philosophy.

The agreement outlines three key areas of collaboration: academic development, joint research and scholarly publications, and community engagement initiatives. The partnership aims to enhance academic synergy between institutions, improve the quality of higher education, and expand the social impact of academia in Indonesian society. read more

Fast Track Program for Undergraduate–Graduate Studies at the Faculty of Philosophy UGM Now Open

This year, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada officially opens registration for its new Fast Track Program, which integrates undergraduate and graduate-level studies. This accelerated program enables eligible undergraduate students to begin their master’s courses while completing their bachelor’s degree, thus offering a seamless transition into graduate studies in a related field.

The Fast Track Program is designed to prepare highly qualified and competitive graduates in a shorter time than the conventional route, while maintaining high academic standards. By joining the program, students can complete both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in five years or less. read more

Faculty of Philosophy UGM Promotes Fast Track Program and LinkedIn Utilization for Students

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a socialization event for two key programs aimed at supporting students’ academic development and career readiness on Thursday, April 17, 2025. Held at the Faculty’s Persatuan Room, the event focused on two main topics: the Bachelor-to-Master Fast Track Program and the strategic use of the professional platform LinkedIn.

Two speakers from the faculty leadership were present to deliver the presentations. Dr. Agus Himmawan Utomo, S.S., M.Ag., Vice Dean for Academic and Student Affairs, provided an overview of the Fast Track Program. Meanwhile, Dr. Iva Ariani, S.S., M.Hum., Vice Dean for Research, Community Service, Collaboration, and Alumni, spoke on the importance of developing a professional student profile through LinkedIn. read more

Ramadan Reflection and Iftar Gathering at the Faculty of Philosophy UGM: A Moment to Strengthen Bonds and Enhance Self-Development

In the spirit of the holy month of Ramadan, the Faculty of Philosophy, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), held a Ramadan reflection and iftar gathering on Thursday, March 21, 2025. The event, themed “Ramadan as a Month for Enhancing Human Quality”, was attended by the entire faculty community, including lecturers, administrative staff, outsourced workers, daily workers, and student representatives from undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs.

The event began in the late afternoon with the recitation of verses from the Holy Qur’an, followed by opening remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy UGM, Prof. Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, S.S., M.Hum. In her speech, the Dean expressed her hope that the gathering would not only serve as a moment of togetherness but also strengthen the spirit of collective work within the faculty environment. read more
