UGM Faculty of Philosophy Shares Best Practices in MKWK and Religious Moderation with ITB Delegates

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted a visit from lecturers and administrative staff from Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) on Wednesday, December 11, 2024. The visit facilitated discussions and knowledge-sharing on the management of mandatory curriculum courses (MKWK), particularly Pancasila and Citizenship, as well as the implementation of the Religious Moderation and National Defense House program led by UGM’s Faculty of Philosophy.

The event opened with a welcome address by the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, Dr. Rr. Siti Murtiningsih, S.S., M.Hum., who expressed appreciation for ITB’s visit. She highlighted the importance of inter-university collaboration to develop educational programs that prioritize both academic excellence and a strong foundation of values for students. read more

Visit of UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta to the Faculty of Philosophy, UGM

On Monday, December 2, 2024, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a visit from Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Raden Mas Said Surakarta. The event, held in the Persatuan Room on the 3rd floor, commenced at 8:00 AM and was attended by 70 students along with their academic supervisors.

Dr. Rizal Mustansyir and Dr. Septiana Dwi Putri Maharani were present as keynote speakers, delivering engaging presentations about the Faculty of Philosophy’s flagship programs, particularly the Nusantara Philosophy Laboratory. This laboratory exemplifies the faculty’s commitment to exploring and preserving the rich philosophical heritage of the Nusantara region. read more

Celebrating Art, Culture, and Inclusivity in Yogyakarta

Sapiens Club, a student organization from the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada, presented a vibrant cultural event titled Ode to Karsa. Held at IFI-LIP Yogyakarta in Sagan, this celebration brought together art, culture, and inclusivity through an engaging series of activities: kite painting, a sign language workshop, and a theatrical performance in collaboration with FSB Retorika titled Sukmaku Rawagede. Open to students, the Deaf community, and the general public, the event fostered creativity, understanding, and reflection on Indonesia’s historical and cultural narratives. read more

Philoday Debate 2024: Celebrating the World of Philosophy Through Debate

In commemoration of World Philosophy Day 2024, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted the Philoday Debate 2024. The competition embraced the overarching theme “Why Philosophy Matters?” with the subtheme “The Matters of Philosophical Issue in Science and Humanities Studies.” This event invited participants to reflect on the critical role of philosophy in scientific and humanities discourse.

The event attracted university students from various institutions across Indonesia, who competed in a debate testing their depth of understanding, argumentative skills, and critical thinking. Teams faced off in debates on predetermined motions, with each team assigned roles as either the proposition (pro) or the opposition (con), presenting arguments for or against the motion. read more

The 12th International Conference on Nusantara Philosophy (ICNP): Exploring the Philosophy of Well-Being and Sustainable Development

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully hosted the 12th International Conference on Nusantara Philosophy (ICNP) on November 25-26, 2024. Conducted online, this year’s conference centered on the theme “Philosophy of Well-Being: Revisiting the Idea of Sustainable Living and Development.”

The event brought together academics, researchers, and practitioners from diverse fields to discuss and seek a philosophical framework for sustainable development and societal well-being. A key focus of the conference was incorporating indigenous perspectives into the discourse on development while critically examining how such perspectives are often excluded from public policy and knowledge construction. read more

In celebration of World Philosophy Day, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted a unique and aesthetic art exhibition titled “Philosophy (Try Again) Makes Bread: Why Philosophy?” from November 21 to 26, 2024. The event invited both artists and art enthusiasts to reflect on the significance of philosophy as a body of knowledge that is not only theoretical but also relevant to everyday life.

Inspired by Louis Katsoff’s critique that philosophy “does not make bread,” the exhibition sought to answer this fundamental question: why philosophy? According to the organizers, it was a reflective question aimed at reevaluating the role of philosophy in shaping wisdom and meaning in human life. read more

UGM Faculty of Philosophy Holds Screening and Discussion of Setan Jawa and Sejarah Kisah-Kisah yang Musnah Films

In celebration of World Philosophy Day, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted two film screenings and discussions: Setan Jawa directed by Garin Nugroho on Monday, November 25, and Sejarah Kisah-Kisah yang Musnah by B.W. Purbanegara on Tuesday, November 26. Both events took place at the Faculty of Philosophy, drawing participants from UGM students as well as the general public.

Setan Jawa, a silent film set in colonial Java, tells a story of love, rage, and betrayal, filled with symbolism and visual allure. The screening was attended by Garin Nugroho, the director, and Herlambang Yudho, an alumni of UGM’s Faculty of Philosophy, who joined the discussion as a speaker. The discussion, moderated by Christopher Andrew Haryadi, a UGM Philosophy student, focused on the philosophical and artistic dimensions of the film. read more

World Philosophy Day Public Lecture Explores Localism from a Philosophical Perspective

In commemoration of World Philosophy Day, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted a public lecture on Thursday, November 23, 2024, themed “Why Philosophy Matters.” The event featured Prof. Andrew Arana from the University of Lorraine, France, who discussed the concept of localism through a philosophical lens.

The lecture explored how localism, or preference for local matters, is reflected in various aspects of life, such as consumption, language, and even mathematics, and how philosophy uncovers the commonalities between these areas. Prof. Arana began by discussing consumer localism, which is often manifested through a preference for local products. read more
