The Faculty of Philosophy, Universitas Gadjah Mada established a research institution on applied ethics and philosophy which was named the Institute for Ethics and Applied Philosophy. The Institute for Ethics and Applied Philosophy held its first monthly discussion on Wednesday, March 13, 2019. This monthly discussion carried the theme “Ethics of the Use of Human Subjects in Humanities Social Research”. This discussion, presented by a keynote speaker, a lecturer at the UGM FKKMK namely Prof. Dra. RA. Yayi Suryo Prabandari, M.Sc., Ph.D discussed research, ethical principles, ethical research, explanation and agreement and the category of ethical permits.

Prof. Dra. RA. Yayi Suryo Prabandari, M.Sc., Ph.D said, cited from the Universal Declaration of Human Rights states “Everyone has the right to an adequate standard of living for the health and willingness of himself and his family” so that the principles of Bioethics are autonomy, kindness, non- crime, and justice.

In addition, Agus Wahyudi, MA, Ph.D, Director of the Institute for Ethics and Applied Philosophy discussed Research and the “Human Subject”: Recognizing the Risks Related to Participation in Social Sciences Research. Risks related to involvement in scientific research social activities include invasion of privacy, breach of confidentiality, and study procedures. In study procedures, subjects can be exposed to risk because they play a role or are involved in research, for example, researchers who conduct interviews with a member of a crime gang may need to find a place for safe interviews which allows other gang members not to know of interactions through interviews.
