Philosophical Reflection in Art Exhibition: “Philosophy (Try Again) Makes Bread: Why Philosophy?”

In celebration of World Philosophy Day, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted a unique and aesthetic art exhibition titled “Philosophy (Try Again) Makes Bread: Why Philosophy?” from November 21 to 26, 2024. The event invited both artists and art enthusiasts to reflect on the significance of philosophy as a body of knowledge that is not only theoretical but also relevant to everyday life.

Inspired by Louis Katsoff’s critique that philosophy “does not make bread,” the exhibition sought to answer this fundamental question: why philosophy? According to the organizers, it was a reflective question aimed at reevaluating the role of philosophy in shaping wisdom and meaning in human life. read more

UGM Faculty of Philosophy Holds Screening and Discussion of Setan Jawa and Sejarah Kisah-Kisah yang Musnah Films

In celebration of World Philosophy Day, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted two film screenings and discussions: Setan Jawa directed by Garin Nugroho on Monday, November 25, and Sejarah Kisah-Kisah yang Musnah by B.W. Purbanegara on Tuesday, November 26. Both events took place at the Faculty of Philosophy, drawing participants from UGM students as well as the general public.

Setan Jawa, a silent film set in colonial Java, tells a story of love, rage, and betrayal, filled with symbolism and visual allure. The screening was attended by Garin Nugroho, the director, and Herlambang Yudho, an alumni of UGM’s Faculty of Philosophy, who joined the discussion as a speaker. The discussion, moderated by Christopher Andrew Haryadi, a UGM Philosophy student, focused on the philosophical and artistic dimensions of the film. read more

In commemoration of World Philosophy Day, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) hosted a public lecture on Thursday, November 23, 2024, themed “Why Philosophy Matters.” The event featured Prof. Andrew Arana from the University of Lorraine, France, who discussed the concept of localism through a philosophical lens.

The lecture explored how localism, or preference for local matters, is reflected in various aspects of life, such as consumption, language, and even mathematics, and how philosophy uncovers the commonalities between these areas. Prof. Arana began by discussing consumer localism, which is often manifested through a preference for local products. read more

Celebrating World Philosophy Day, Faculty of Philosophy UGM Hosts Philo Run

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held the 2024 Philo Run, a unique event combining physical activity with philosophical reflection, on Sunday, November 24. Over 300 participants from various backgrounds, including students, faculty members, running communities, and the general public, joined the event, which was part of the celebrations for World Philosophy Day, themed “Philosophy of Well-Being.”

Taking place on the UGM campus, Philo Run offered a distinct twist on traditional running events. Along the 5-kilometer route, participants were greeted with philosophical quotes and reflections, encouraging them to contemplate the true meaning of well-being—not just in physical terms but also mental and spiritual health. read more

Faculty of Philosophy UGM Holds Socialization on Expert Field Groups to Support Lecturer Career Development

The Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) organized a socialization session on Expert Field Groups (Kelompok Bidang Keahlian/KBK) on Wednesday, November 20, 2024. The event was attended by all faculty members and featured a presentation by Prof. Suadi, S.Pi., M.Agr.Sc., Ph.D., the Director of Human Resources at UGM.

During the session, Prof. Suadi explained the importance of KBK in the context of developing the expertise of lecturers at UGM. Although KBK is not explicitly mentioned in the Ministerial Regulation of Education and Culture, he clarified that this concept is closely related to the obligation of Professors to lead areas of expertise that are in line with the development of knowledge. read more

UNIDA Gontor Students Learn about the Relationship Between Religion and Science at the Faculty of Philosophy UGM

On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a visit from the Aqidah Philosophy Department of the Faculty of Ushuluddin at Universitas Darussalam (UNIDA) Gontor. Around 70 students and accompanying lecturers from UNIDA Gontor attended the visit, which aimed to expand academic knowledge and strengthen collaboration between the two higher education institutions, particularly in the fields of philosophy and religion.

The event took place in the Persatuan Room on the third floor of the Faculty of Philosophy UGM. During the visit, the UNIDA Gontor students participated in a public lecture and interactive discussion on the intriguing topic of the relationship between religion and science and technology (saintek). read more

SMA Negeri 2 Kuta Bali Visits the Faculty of Philosophy UGM

On Friday, November 8, 2024, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) welcomed a visit from SMA Negeri 2 Kuta Bali. A total of 65 students and 6 accompanying teachers attended the event at the Persatuan Room on the third floor to gain a deeper understanding of higher education and academic life at the Faculty of Philosophy UGM.

During this visit, Dr. Heri Santoso, a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy, served as the main speaker, providing valuable insights into the history of UGM, the strengths of the Faculty of Philosophy, and the various programs offered. Dr. Heri also shared information about the student admissions process and offered guidance on how to choose a major that aligns with the students’ interests and talents. read more

SMK Kristen IPEKA Grand Wisata Visits the Faculty of Philosophy UGM

On Thursday, November 7, 2024, the Faculty of Philosophy at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) warmly welcomed a visit from SMA Kristen IPEKA Grand Wisata, located in Bekasi, West Java. A total of 54 students and accompanying teachers gathered in the Persatuan Room on the third floor to gain a deeper understanding of philosophy and academic life at UGM.

The event was led by Taufiqurrahman, S.Fil., M.Phil, a lecturer at the Faculty of Philosophy, who provided an insightful explanation about the history, vision, and programs offered by the Faculty of Philosophy, as well as the opportunities available to philosophy students. The students were also informed about the student admissions process and tips on choosing the right major based on their interests and potential. read more
